Champions Crowned

The first-ever JGTA champions were been crowned today after a fierce battle in final round of the JGTA Bintan Lagoon Junior Championship presented by dwell Student Living.

Camille Boyd (2020) of Yorba Linda, California took the Girl’s Division, finishing at 2-over par with scores of 72-74-72 for a total of 218 on the week. Boyd has Fully Exempt status in the American Junior Golf Association, having finished T3rd at the Under Armour/ Scott Stallings Championship in 2017.

The biggest story of the day was Boy’s Division Champion Li Jiakun (2019) of Shanghai, China ending the day with a 6-under par score of 66, going bogey-free on the back nine and racking up 7 birdies on the day. Li took the Boy’s Division by 8 strokes over Connor Kelly (2019) of Bangkok, Thailand, finishing the tournament with a score of 77-78-66-221.

“Leading up to this tournament, my iron play wasn’t great. I started working with my coach on my iron play and I had a great week because of it,” Boyd said about her win.

On his first-place finish in the Boy’s Division, Li commented

“I really haven’t played much golf recently so I really didn’t expect to play well. I just ended up making a lot of birdies and was happy with my low score in the third round.”

Both players accredited their success to the support of their parents.

Junior Order of Merit

Boyd and Li, The first ever JGTA champions, will receive the highest-points honors in the Junior Order of Merit, putting them on top of the ranking after the first JGTA event. Joint-best rounds of the day came from Xuan Luo (2021) of Shanghai, China in the Boy’s Division and Annie Sun (2019) of Beijing, China in the Girl’s Division, each putting together tournament-best scores of 74.

JGTA Founder-Director and former Executive Chairman of the Asian Tour, Kyi Hla Han was on-site for the inaugural event.

“I wanted to thank everyone for coming to the inaugural JGTA Bintan Lagoon Junior Championship,” said Kyi Hla Han. “It was a wonderful event and the wind proved difficult for the players. We hope that this tour continues to grow so that players from Asia get exposure and have a chance to play on a higher level”.

The next JGTA tournament, the JGTA Taiwan Junior Championship at National Golf Country Club takes place January 2-5, 2018.
