A Gap Unfulfilled at Hong Kong Junior Classic at Clearwater Bay
It is starting to become common for players from Hong Kong to play golf at American Universities. We see more and more competitors playing and preparing for college golf such as JGTA alumni Yin Ho Yue (University of Oregon), Ben Wong (Southern Methodist University), and Virginie Ding (verbal commitment with Vanderbilt University). With the work of the AJGA and the JGTA providing the pathway for the next generation of prominent junior golfers locally, players from Hong Kong are under the college golf recruitment spotlight and there is a gap unfulfilled – a player from Hong Kong has yet to win a JGTA event.
The JGTA Hong Kong Junior Classic at Clearwater Bay could be the first event won by a star from Hong Kong…or the title could be taken by one of the many great players from one of the additional 15 countries that may be in the field.
With the number of rising stars coming out of junior golf hotbeds such as Taiwan, China, Thailand, and the Philippines, players from Hong Kong are going to have to prove what it takes to win in their city, and it will not be an easy feat.
